The Perfect Patio – the Easy Way!
A new patio is a relatively low cost solution for giving a garden a makeover. Deco-Pak explains how to avoid the difficulties that can arise from incorrect measuring and consistency of the bedding mortar with the use of EasyBuild Patio Slab Mix, a specialist ready to use product.
Step 1
Prepare the ground by removing all top soil and plant matter including, a margin of 150mm or more beyond the edges of the area that the patio or paving will cover. Then, dig out to the depth required and apply a substrate of EasyBuild Mixed Ballast on top of the level soil. Compact and level the substrate with a vibrating plate, piece of timber or roller. Ensure enough material has been dug out to allow for the thickness of the slab itself and around 25mm for the slab layer bed.
Step 2
Set out the area with string lines and level pegs then plan a crossfall of 1 in 40, which equates to 25mm per metre. This will provide a run off for rainwater which will prevent the formation of puddles. Apply EasyBuild Patio Slab Mix to the required depth of at least 25mm and rake level. As a guide, three 440mm by 440mm paving stones can be laid with one bag when the product is used at this thickness.
Step 3
Sprinkle the surface with clean water using a hosepipe or fine rose until the EasyBuild Patio Slab Mix is wet through and rake level again. It is crucial that the product is wet throughout but avoid creating standing pools of water on the surface. The size of the soaked area should be just enough to place several slabs easily.
Step 4
Highly porous slabs may need to be dampened slightly to control suction. Use a rubber mallet to tap the slabs into place then check that the level is correct with a straight edge board and spirit level. Repeat the process, easing the slabs into position using spacers if necessary.
Step 5
If you wish to point the slabs, wait one or two days after laying and fill the joints between them with EasyBuild Jointing Sand by brushing the sand in. Alternatively, a fine trowel or pointing trowel can be used to push EasyBuild Sand and Cement into the joints. This should be done in dry conditions. To avoid staining, clean away excess mortar on the face of the slab. Cover the patio with plastic sheeting for protection and allow 48 hours for the EasyBuild Patio Slab Mix to set before walking on it.
